The Noll Landscape Group specializes in designing and building outdoor kitchens in Fishers, IN, and beyond. Outdoor kitchens offer a variety of benefits to homeowners, but special precautions must be taken to prepare your kitchen for winter. If you’re new to owning an outdoor kitchen, follow these six simple steps to prepare for winter.
As with any outdoor water source, you must shut off the water lines before temperatures dip below freezing. Then, drain the lines to your fridge, sink, ice maker, etc. Once the drains are emptied, leave the drain valves open during the winter to prevent the lines from freezing.
Next, power off and unplug your refrigerator. Then remove all food items and give it a good cleaning. Make sure to thoroughly dry the interior to prevent mold growth.
If your refrigerator is equipped with an ice maker, double check that you’ve turned off the water supply to the fridge. Then, turn off the ice maker and remove the ice from the bin. Once empty, clean and thoroughly dry the ice bin.
Ensure that the water to the sink is turned off. Then, fully open the hot and cold taps to remove all moisture from the line. Clean and dry the sink, and cover it to protect it from debris and drain clogs.
Your grill will likely benefit from a thorough end-of-season cleaning. Clean and polish the exterior, brush and clean the grates, and empty the cleanout. If you will not be using your grill during the winter, turn off the gas line and cover the grill.
Lastly, empty your cabinets and remove any crumbs and debris. Then, clean and polish the surface to remove grease and grime. Stainless steel cabinets will benefit from a layer of stainless steel polish. Wooden cabinets, however, need to be oiled and/or sealed to protect them from moisture and temperature changes.
