Over the years, we’ve had more and more requests to install one specific kind of water feature: a rain garden. Rain gardens are a beautiful, eco-friendly addition to any yard.

What Is a Rain Garden?

Rain gardens absorb and filter rainwater to reduce runoff from your property. Typically, rain gardens are planted in low spots in the yard to naturally collect rainwater. Additionally, some homeowners divert downspouts into the rain garden to further prevent runoff water from escaping their property.

Why Create a Rain Garden?

Generally, rain from a home’s downspout flows into the yard, leaches into local groundwater, and flows into storm drains. Unfortunately, this water is often full of pollutants from lawn fertilizers and pesticides. Rain gardens, on the other hand, mitigate the effects of this runoff water by absorbing the pollutants before they reach the local water system. Additionally, mature rain gardens absorb excess water and help prevent your lawn and home from flooding.

Construction and Placement

If you plan to divert your downspouts into the rain garden, we will need to place it near your home. We recommend planting the garden at least 10 feet away from the home’s perimeter, though, to keep water from leaking into the basement. If your yard does not have a natural depression, we will create one in an ideal location. Most rain gardens are at least 150 square feet in size and can be constructed in a variety of shapes.

Plants for a Rain Garden

When selecting plants for the rain garden, we will help you select hardy perennials that will establish deep roots. The center of the garden should include plants that thrive in moist conditions as they will experience the longest periods of moisture. On the other hand, plants on the perimeter of the garden need to be more drought resistant as they will rarely experience standing water.
